The photographic series Not Not Glass just completed, opened my eyes to a whole new world of calligraphic linework and foreign shapes. I wanted to explore this world further, so I made another series of photographs below. And above, I explore this new found vocabulary with ink, charcoal, and pencil.
The paintings are very much studies of the photographs. I am trying to explore what elements make up this unfamiliar language, and also trying to get familiar with what it feels like to make such shapes and lines manually with brush and ink. I'm really wide eyed at this point, and the paintings have that feeling about them, like when you are first uttering your first few words of a new language. There is that bit of unsurety, and a slight mechanical delivery. And tons of discards. But I quite like that part about them. I'm practicing. These were quite fun to make.
